The story of the young king Josiah (ca. 640 β 609 BC) is a remarkably story. While the nation has slid towards intensive idolatry under former kings, Josiah has his heart set on God. He starts a radical reform, restoring the nations worship of the true God. In the long run his work seems to be of little effect. Already his sons trample on their fathers’ inheritance and re-introduce many idols. But as God sees, rewards and values Josiahs work it is ultimately not in vain.
How do we orient our lives to the worship of God? Does anything need to be reformed? How do we keep up doing good when it seems to be of little effect?
